CHARACTERS
Charles Condomine
Male-presenting, 35–50
A successful novelist with charm, intelligence, and a dry wit. Sophisticated and self- assured, Charles finds himself increasingly unsettled as his carefully ordered world descends into supernatural chaos. This role calls for strong comic timing and the ability to balance urbane confidence with mounting exasperation.
Ruth Condomine
Female-presenting, 30–45
Charles’s second wife. Elegant, perceptive, and thoroughly practical, Ruth is the embodiment of composure and good sense. Her sharp intelligence and controlled demeanor make her a strong counterpoint to the madness unfolding around her, while her growing frustration provides rich comic opportunity.
Elvira Condomine
Female-presenting, 30–45
Charles’s first wife, returned from beyond the grave. Glamorous, witty, and irresistibly mischievous, Elvira delights in disrupting Charles’s domestic life with supernatural flair. This role requires charisma, sophistication, and a playful command of Noel Coward’s sparkling comedy.
Madame Arcati
Female-presenting, 45–70
An eccentric medium with boundless energy, absolute conviction, and an undeniable flair for the theatrical. Unconventional, larger than life, and gloriously confident in her spiritual abilities, Madame Arcati is one of the play’s most memorable comic roles. The actor should bring bold physicality, sharp comedic instincts, and a commanding stage presence.
Dr. George Bradman
Male-presenting, 40–60
A respectable, mild-mannered physician and dinner guest. Sensible, courteous, and somewhat conventional, Dr. Bradman provides a grounded presence amid the increasingly bizarre events. A strong supporting role with understated comic potential.
Mrs. Violet Bradman
Female-presenting, 40–60
Dr. Bradman’s wife. Socially polished, cheerful, and curious, Mrs. Bradman is drawn into the evening’s strange proceedings with a mixture of fascination and propriety. A delightful supporting role offering light comedy and strong ensemble contribution.
Edith
Female-presenting, 18–30
The Condomines’ maid. Nervous, impressionable, and easily unsettled, Edith is deeply affected by the eerie events in the household. A wonderful comedic role that benefits from expressive reactions, strong timing, and a clear sense of character.
We welcome and encourage auditions from actors of all races, ethnicities, and
backgrounds.
BRITISH ACCENTS AREN'T NEEDED, BUT MID-ATLANTIC/POSH IS.
ABOUT THE SHOW
A smash comedy hit in London and New York, this much-revived classic from the playwright of Private Lives concerns fussy, cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine, who has remarried but finds himself haunted (literally) by the ghost of his late first wife, Elvira. Clever, insistent and well-aware of Charles’ shortcomings, Elvira is called up by a visiting “happy medium,” the eccentric and flighty Madame Arcati. As everyone’s personalities clash, Charles’ current wife, Ruth, is accidentally killed. She “passes over” and joins Elvira, allowing the two “blithe spirits” to haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity. Till death do us part? That’s negotiable.COMPENSATION
