Callbacks: Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19
Rehearsals: will begin in early April
Performance Dates: May 5-7, May 12-14, May 18-20, 2023 - NO CONFLICTS ALLOWED
AUDITION INFORMATION:
Auditions are held by appointment only at 222 E Irving Blvd, Irving TX 75060. Auditions will be by appointment in 10 minute slots. Actors will not be reading at the initial auditions - just singing. Reading from the script will be done at callbacks. Please bring a current resume and headshot.
All singers will be expected to have more “legit”/traditional/classical voices. There is both Italian and English in the score. For the audition, prepare one (1) 32-bar cut (about 1:30) in the style of the show. Please choose a piece that highlights your range ability to sing lyrically, as well as show your acting ability.
CHARACTERS:
- Margaret Johnson – Late 40s to early 60s. American tourist. Romantic hear. She wants everything for Clara that she never had. Legit Soprano with a strong middle voice. Range low A to high G.
- Clara Johnson – 20s. Young American. Margaret’s daughter. Very wide-eyed and childlike in her demeanor. Suffered a childhood trauma. She loves Fabrizio. Soprano with strong voice in both ends of range. Low A to high A.
- Fabrizio Naccarelli – 20s. Young romantic. Handsome and spontaneous. Deeply in love with Clara. An artist at heart. Lyrical tenor. Low B-flat to high B.
- Giuseppe Naccarelli – 30s. Fabrizio’s older brother. Permanent twinkle in his eye. Funny and energetic. Baritone. A-flat to F.
- Franca Naccarelli – 30s. Giuseppe’s wife. Somewhat cynical about life and marriage. Fiery. Legit Soprano. Low B-flat to high B.
- Signor Naccarelli – Late 40s to 60s Italian. Leading man. Still believes in romance. Not happy with his life.. Baritone. Low A to D.
- Signora Naccarelli – Late 40s to 60s. Italian. Naccarelli’s wife. She has put up with a lot in her life. Soprano with strong low range or mezzo with strong high notes. Low C-sharp to high B.
- Roy Johnson – Late 40s to 60s. Margaret’s Southern-American husband. Does not sing.
- Medium-sized ensemble to play a hundred different people in Italy.
ABOUT THE SHOW:
Summer 1953: Margaret Johnson, an elegant and strong-willed Southern woman has taken her daughter Clara on a vacation in Italy. When a gust of wind blows Clara’s hat right into the hands of a young Italian gentleman, neither language nor age nor familial disapproval can stop their whirlwind love affair. As Clara and Fabrizio fall into each other’s arms, Margaret must grapple with the question of whether to disclose Clara’s devastating secret to Fabrizio’s warm, passionate Italian family. With soaring operatic melodies, THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA is a story about mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and the deeply intertwined emotions of love and loss.
COMPENSATION:
Actors receive a gas stipend and comp tickets.
